Locavore Meal Plan January 13-19
Welcome to The Local Kitchener. Â If you’re new here check out all the great meal plan ideas from all throughout the year. Â And it’s worth seeing the current giveaway for local readers too!
This week starts out vegan. I picked up Ann Gentry’s Vegan Family Meals at the library and found a few decent looking recipes to try out, including Monday’s Lentil Loaf and Tuesday’s Borscht recipe. Overall the book was a bit weak on main course ideas for dinner, but the dishes I’ve picked out look quite promising.
Since we are not actually vegan we will probably just serve the borscht with local yogurt rather than the homemade tofu sour cream that she uses. We continue eating vegetarian the next several days, still featuring dairy products, but no meat.
Recently I’ve had the goal of preparing my grains with more traditional (pre-industrialization style) methods so that means only using wheat if it’s soaked (12-24 hours) or soured. This is not only supposed to be healthier (which is a good reason to do something) but also much tastier (which is a better reason to do it). I’ve had great success lately with this version of the Tartine Bread , only I use quite a bit more whole wheat flour.  And speaking of soaking grains and bread, I got an electric knife for my birthday and it really does cut things nicely!
We’ll be gone all weekend, thus there are no meals, because we are going on a crazy road trip to see my brother in Atlanta where he’ll briefly be with his Seattle based production of a brand new musical version of James and the Giant Peach . Sadly we were unable to travel to Seattle to see him but when we found out he’d be down south for one brief presentation we decided that we could drive that far so road-trippin’ we are! We hope to catch up with some of our good Atl friends too and go to our old church. Sadly in such a brief trip we won’t be able to see everyone we love, so I guess we’ll have to go back again as soon as we’re able….
